1.5 Million Nigerians In Italy Can’t Return Home – NIDOE

Out of about three million Nigerians registered in Italy, about 1.5 million of them do not have Nigerian passports thereby preventing them from returning home or getting jobs.

This observation was made by George Omo-Iduhon, Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation, Europe, NIDOE, Italy Chapter, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Lagos on Saturday, adding that there are more Nigerians in Italy than in other European countries because most Nigerians prefer to have their political asylum in Italy.

While lamenting the regular cases of shortage of Nigerian passport, Mr. Omo-Iduhon called on the government to address the problem because, according to him, Italy serves as the gateway for Nigerians to other countries in Europe.

The chairman of NIDOE, the European arm of a global Nigerian diaspora network which was established in 2000 by the Olusegun Obasanjo administration, noted that the supply of 500 booklets of passport to the Nigerian embassy in Italy was grossly inadequate.

While observing that giving Italy 20,000 booklets in a month would not be enough, he maintained that it would be unhelpful to use the same sharing formula for all the countries in Europe because of the preponderant number of Nigerians in Italy.
