(By Amie Tams)-The opening games in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup going on in Russia have recorded unexpected casualties and upsets, narrowing the chances of traditional big teams to make it up to the next stage.
Germany, the defending champions suffered a surprise defeat (0-1) in the hands of Mexico when Hirving Lozano took advantage of a counter attack to place Mexico ahead in the very competitive engagement, the second time in history that Mexico will be beating Germany.
The upsets were not limited to Germany, Brazil, one of the favourites in every World Cup was forced to 1-1 draw by Switzerland, the same treatment Iceland gave to Argentina.
Recall that at the first game of the competition, Russia humiliated Saudi Arabia 5-0, while Nigeria went down 0-2 in favour of Croatia.
Meanwhile, as Nigerians bemoan the poor outing and result of the Super Eagles in their first match at the group stage, Coach Gerrot Rohr has promised that Nigeria will beat Iceland and Argentina in subsequent encounters at the group stage to progress to the next stage of the competition.
Speaking after his team’s loss to Croatia Saturday night, Coach of the Super Eagles blamed their misfortune on some mistakes but assured that they will be corrected to improve the team’s efficiency and results in subsequent games.
Nigeria will meet Iceland on 22 June while their last game at the group stage with Argentina comes up 26 June.
