(By Iheanyi Ezinwo) – History was made in Rivers State on Tuesday when over 25,000 faithful of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, from the River East Senatorial District gathered at the famous Yakubu Gowon stadium, Elakahia to appreciate the outstanding performance of incumbent governor of the state, Chief Ezenwo Nyesom Wike and for urging him to put himself forward for a second term.
The commendation was made by a political strategist and Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters and Strategy, Chief Emeh Glory Emeh while fielding questions from newsmen on the sideline of the ceremony.
Chief Emeh, who served in several capacities in the state including that of Chief of Staff said the endorsement was a manifestation of how the people of the state rated Governor Wike, who is described by many as a leader they can trust.
“Let me use this opportunity to thank the media for appreciating the good works of Governor Wike. As you rightly said, this is just like one third of the state. I am also aware that politicians from Rivers West and South East are warming up and competing among themselves as to who comes up next.
“The Rivers East Senatorial District, which is the home district of the governor consists of Port Harcourt, Obio/Akpor, Emohua, Ikwerre, Okrika, Ogu/Bolo, Etche and Omuma local governments.
“This is the epicentre of political activities in Rivers State and that they took the lead today is understandable, and I believe that in the next couple of weeks, the other two senatorial districts will take their turns”, Barr. Emeh said.
Meanwhile, all the speakers at the ceremony including OCJ Okocha, Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former national president of Nigerian Bar Association, Senator George Sekibo, Rt. Hon. Austin Opara, Sir Celestine Omehia, former governor of Rivers State, Mrs. Woluchor and Dr. Abiye Sekibo were united in their opinion that Governor Wike has performed creditably and will not have difficulties winning a second tenure.
In a motion moved by Hon. O.K. Chindah, member, Federal House of Representatives and seconded by Hon. Evans Bipi, Chief Whip at the Rivers State House of Assembly, the ayes had their way with a thunderous response.
In his remarks, the elated Governor Wike was full of praises and gratitude to the Rivers East Senatorial District for the decision to put themselves together for the endorsement.
He used the opportunity to re-assure that Rivers people will resist the use of security agencies to intimidate members of the PDP, even as he re-emphasized that as a true son of the state, that he will not disappoint and promised to serve to the best of his ability.
