As political activities gather momentum in Nigeria ahead of the 2023 general elections, there are strong indications that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar are both at home in Rivers State. The reason, according to Notable Outcome’s investigation is that both candidates enjoy large followership in Rivers State, and this development is bolstered by the failures of Governor Nyesom Wike and Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi to secure the tickets to contest presidential election in the Peoples Democratic Party and APC respectively.
The camp of Atiku Abubakar, according to reports are said to be swelling because of the influx of chieftains of the PDP from Rivers State, a move political watchers perceive not to have the blessing of the Rivers governor, who is alleged to be romancing with the opposition.
Meanwhile, the APC in Rivers State is said to be uncomfortable with the recent romance between the party’s presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s allies and Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State. A chieftain of the APC in Rivers State, Chukwuemeka Eze, in his reaction made reference to the recent visits of the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former Governor Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila to inaugurate some projects in Rivers state.
There were also reports of Governor Wike meeting with the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, Kayode Fayemi; Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, and Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State at different times, and the new found love between hitherto strange political bedfellows, according to Chukwuemeka Eze, do not go down well with Rotimi Amaechi, immediate past Transportation Minister, who feels neglected as the leader of the APC in Rivers State. However, it would be recalled that Governor Wike had consistently said that he will not leave the PDP.
As the scramble for the political soul of Rivers state continues, political pundits are predicting that the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, might take advantage of Amaechi’s unhappiness with Tinubu and woo him to return to the PDP.
With Bola Tinubu said to be having a working relationship with Senator Magnus Abe, governorsh candidate of the Social Democratic Party, his perceived romance with Governor Wike, according to political analysts, gives him a strong hold in Rivers State.
Meanwhile, the alleged neglect of Chibuike Anaechi, pundits believe could make him vulnerable to succumbing to the idea of a return to the PDP, a development that could further re-unite him with Atiku, who is said to be enjoying a robost relationship with the former Governor, thereby swelling the population of followers of Atiku in Rivers State.
