Since Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State gave the go ahead to governorship aspirants in the Peoples Democratic Party to commence consultations among leaders of the party in the state last month, many of the aspirants who were using codes have started reaching out to those who can help them succeed to flag the Peoples Democratic Party flag and subsequently succeed Governor Wike.
While some of them are self-motivated, it does appear that there also exists those who are being called to throw in their hart. Among notable the politicoans said to be eyeing the top job n Rivers State are Hons. Boma Iyaye. Marcus Nle-Eji, Tammy Danagogo, David Briggs and Rt. Hon. Austin Opara. There are also indications that Dr. Abiye Sekibo, Senators George Sekibo and Barry Mpigi as well as Dunnamene Deekor are also in the race for the Rivers State Brick house in 2022.
Understandably, because the path to glory is getting crowded, some have started clashing with others. Well, because mischief, blackmail, misinformation are parh of the game in our clime, the ball has started rolling. One thing is however clear, the race may not be won by the swiftest nor victory to the strongest or to the person who considers himself the most popular.
In the important race of life, it is common to see the last coming first, while the first finds himself on the back seat. Looking at the situation in Rivers State vis – a – vis the politics of Electoral Act amendment skewing in favour of party leadership, it would appear that, at the end of the day, only those who are favoured by the gods of the parties will make it. The reason is because, the law has given elastic powers to leadership to take the final decision on internal matters of the party, and 2023 will not be an exception.
For the pretenders who may not be favoured, the options may include accepting to remain loyal and run for an inferior office, or bolt out to a weaker party to grab the governorship ticket even when they don’t stand a chance of winning. However, the advantage such aggrieved politicians may enjoy is the likelihood of negotiating for settlement after election.
As Rivers people await the emergence of the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 elections, one point that the citizens must take cognizance of it that: there is no ethnic group that is marginalizing another in the state. What we have is a situation where insensitive politicians and others who have access to the common wealth are getting richer while the poor, in their respective locations are getting poorer.
As the tempo of political activities increase across the country, the citizens have to look out for politicians who have the records, and mindset to make the welfare of the citizens there priority. They are the ones who can guarantee the future of not only the super – rich but also that of the poor in the society.
