(By Silas Ofori) – The sustained defections of governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, pdp, and their supporters to the ruling All Progressives Congress, appears to tilting the ballance of the 2023 elections in favour of the APC.
While the PDP was still trying to recover from the recent exits of Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State and Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State governor, the APC has been placed on notice again of the defection of the Governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle on Tuesday, in deference to attempts in April by six governors of the PDP to disuade him form leaving the party.
The exit of Governor Bello Matawallewill, along with the states and the National Assembly members except a member representing Anka Mafara Federal Constituency, Honourable Kabiru Mafara, the Deputy Governor, Barrister Mahdi Aliyu Gusau, and few officials of the PDP, will create a big hole in the PDP, especially against the background of reports of further defections to the ruling APC.
Keen observers of the emergent developments who spoke with Notable Outcome in Port Harcourt were of the view that the political re-allignments are being skewed against the PDP, and that whoever may emerge as the party’s presidential candiadte may not be a match to the APC, a party that is fast consolidating and repositioning to remain in power at the centre beyond 2023.
