Onueze CJ Okocha, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, from within and outside Rivers State gathered at the Obi Wali International Conference Centre in Port Harcourt to celebrate 40 years of legal practice of Hon. OCJ Okocha, SAN, and inaugural Okpo Club awards.
The occasion, which was organized by Okpo Club of Nigeria, an association of Ikwerre lawyers attracted dignitaries from all walks of life, including the governor of Rivers State, Barr. Nyesom Wike.
Speaking at the event, Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike said the celebration was well deserved in view of the outstanding achievements and contributions of the celebrant to Rivers State, Nigeria, especially in mentoring young lawyers and urged others to emulate the senior advocate’s exemplary life.
In their different contributions, B.M. Wifa, SAN, former governor of Rivers State, Celestine Omehia and other speakers described Hon. OCJ Okocha, SAN, as a seasoned legal practitioner, who has brought joy to many and pride to the legal profession.
They described him as a bridge between old and young lawyers, and a living icon who has made significant contribution to the development of Rivers State, Nigeria and the legal profession.
Responding, Hon. OCJ Okocha, SAN, and former National President of Nigerian Bar Association, thanked the organizers for the honour. He reiterated his determination to remain a bridge builder between the young and old lawyers to serve as an inspiration to others to join the legal profession, while assuring of his continued commitment to the promotion of access to justice and the rule of law.
The former Commissioner of Justice and Attorney General of Rivers State also pledge to continue to collaborate with other lawyers and members of the bench to enhance the Independence of the Judiciary.
The colourful ceremony featured the launching of a book titled: ‘Opening and Enriching the Channels of Justice in the Nigerian Society”, published in honour of Hon. OCJ Okocha, SAN, and the presentation of the Dr Obi Wali Prize for leadership to Governor Nyesom Wike by Okpo Club of Nigeria.
The Okpo Club awards were also presented to former Rivers State Governor, Dr Peter Odili, Hon. OCJ Okocha, SAN, Prof. Chituru Achinewhu and others.
