Centenary College Of Health Science And Technology, First In South South, Rewarded With NBTE Accreditation … Admitting Saturday

(By Iheanyi Ezinwo) -In his quest to close the gap in the production of middle level manpower in the health sector of Rivers State and the entire South South, Sir. Napoleon Ewule established the Centenary College of Health Science and Technology located at Ogbakiri junction in Emohua along the East West road in Rivers State, and in four years of operation and  about 700 students, the vision and hard work of the management of the institution have been rewarded with the accreditation of their programmes by the National Board for Technical Education, NBTE and the Federal Ministry of Health.

Speaking with the publisher of Notable Outcome, Iheanyi Ezinwo, in his office on Monday, Sir Napoleon Ewule, who is the Chairman, Governing Council of Centenary College of Health Science and Technology explained what inspired him to establish the institution four years ago.

“Centenary College is a child of good dream. While in service as a health worker, in the course of carrying out my duties and other engagements that took me to all states in Nigeria, I observed that, whereas other states had multiples of Colleges of Health Technology, Rivers and sister states in the South South had only one each belonging to the respective state governments.

“Whenever the Institute of Environmental Health, for instance wants to train 50 environmental health officers per institution per annum, a state like Kaduna with over 20 Colleges of Health Technology and just two or three accredited will have 20 times 50 slots; others in the west 11 times 50 and 6 times 50, while states in the six South South states, including Rivers State will be having only one each times 50 slots respectively, thus not measuring up in the production of middle level health workers.

“When I considered the benefits that other states were getting by having multiple Colleges of Health

Technology even when were privately owned, I decided, when I was retiring as an environmental health officer, to establish a College of Health Technology. The purpose is to complement the government owned institution in Rivers in the training of middle class health workers”, Sir. Napoleon Ewule explained.

The retired environmental health officer further disclosed that 110 students matriculated in the institution’s first year in 2017, and that the first batch will be going for the National Service later this year, even as he added that they were in affiliations with the Rivers State College of Health Science and Technology and Abia State College of Health Science and Technology in the running of their Higher National Diploma programmes.

The Chairman, Board of Directors of the College also hinted that the institution will be conducting first entrance for candidates seeking admission into National Diploma programmes in Community Health, Environmental Health Technology, Pharmaceutical Health Technology, Medical Imaging, Nutrition and Dietetics, Medical Laboratory Science etc in the 2022 and 2023 academic year on Saturday, 25 at the Emohua campus.

Candidates, according to him, are expected to have credits in mathematics, English Language, Chemistry, Physics, Biology or sometimes Agricultural Science and Health Science, just as he assured applicants who did not originally make the institution their first choice in the Joint Admissions Examination could apply for change of institution.
