(By Silas Amie)-Soccer loving Nigerians who are shocked by the sudden exit of the Super Eagles from the 2018 World Cup in Russia on Tuesday after a 1-2 loss to Argentina in the last group match has joined Didier Drogba and other Africans to condemn the decision of Cuneyt Cakin, the Turkish referee who officiated the match not to award a well deserved second penalty against Argentina in the second half of the match.
Many soccer analysts alleged racial and other subjective considerations, especially after the coach had admitted to Mikel Obi that the ball touched the hand of Marcos Rojo in the 82nd minute but surprisingly said that he did not know why he did not award the penalty that would have strengthened Nigeria’s position to win the match.
Meanwhile, Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr is reportedly begging the Nigeria Football Federation not to sack him because of Nigeria’s exit from the 2018 World Cup in the first round, shattering the joy of soccer loving fans.
It would be recalled that while the referee is being blamed partly for Nigeria’s early exit from the World Cup, another school of thought believes Super Eagles Coach did not live up to expectation, especially in the area of correct reading of the match and ensuring timely replacement of players.
