(By Chris K. Amadi) – There are strong indications that Nigeria’s former president, Dr. Olusegun Obasanjo has successfully convinced the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and House Speaker, Yakubu Dogara to join in his Third Force proposition to stop the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.
It is not only the two principal officers of the National Assembly that are on the line, their supporters across party lines have also embraced the Third Force, with a massive movement expected in the coming weeks that will eventually lead to the transformation of the Third Force into a political party, the Social Democratic Party, with a serving senator and restless member of the All Progressives Congress, Rabiu Kwankwanso, from Kano State said to be favoured to fly the party’s presidential ticket.in 2019.
These indications were given by THEWILL, which reported that, despite Obasanjo’s recent claim that he has no preferred candidate, that the former president had prior to the launch of his movement consulted widely, particularly with General Ibrahim Babangida, General Abdulasami Abubabar and General Aliyu Gusau and zeroed down on Kwankwaso as the candidate with the popularity to challenge Buhari in the North West, especially in Kano, where Buhari has millions of die-hard supporters.
THEWILL further reported that, already, Obasanjo and Babangida have been able to build a formidable coalition of former military leaders including General T.Y. Danjuma, a development that is said to have unsettled the ruling party, resulting in desperate moves to close ranks among feuding stakeholders.
Meanwhile, it is hoped that the emergence of the Social Democratic Party will provide an alternative and viable platform for ambitious politicians who are not favoured in either of the two major political parties to have an opportunity to contest for the political offices of their choice in 2019.
