(By Iheanyi Ezinwo) -Nigerians were Monday taken aback by the outburst of Aisha Buhari, wife of Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari, that more than two years after her husband assumed power, the clinic at Nigeria’s seat of power, Aso Villa, do not have a single syringe while lots of constructions were going on at the facility.
Speaking at a meeting on Reproductive, Maternal, New Born, Child, Adolescent Health and Nutrition (RMNCAH and N) in Abuja, where the president’s wife inaugurated the Governors Wives Advocacy Group (GWAG), on reproductive health noted that though the nation has good policies, that its implementation has been very poor, and that the situation is worsened by the wrong mindset of the operators, resulting in poor health care delivery.
Wondering what would be happening to the ordinary Nigerian on the street when her husband who is the president of the country can spend several months abroad attending to his failing health, Nigeria’s First Lady called for the probe of the monies budgeted annually for the Aso Villa Clinic to determine why construction work should be going on at the clinic when basic medical equipment and tools are lacking.
“If the budget was N100 million, we need to know the way the budget is spent.
“I think it is high time for us to do the right thing.’’
“There are lots of constructions going on in that hospital but there is no single syringe there; what does that mean? Who will use the building?
“So we have to be good in reasoning; you are building and there is no equipment, no consumables in that hospital and the constructions are still going on”, Aisha Buhari screamed, as she solicited for the support of development partners and cooperation of governor’s wives in the advocacy for enhanced health care delivery in Nigeria.
