Attack On Justice Mary Odili: Nigeria Is Moving Towards A Banana Republic, Says Ozekhome …As PANDEF Decries Violence Against Citizens By Agents Of Government

The unlawful raid on the Abuja residence of Justice Mary Odili by security operatives on Friday has been described as politically motivated and designed to embarrass the cerebral justice of the supreme court, and to embarrass her husband. This observation was made by Mike Ozekhome, Senior Advocate of Nigeria in a chat with newsmen, stressing that the raid was an embarrassment for Nigeria, especially against the background of the EFCC’s denial of involvement in the infamy.

“But whatever theory, one thing is clear to me, we are gradually moving towards the precipice of calling ourselves a banana republic. Nowhere in the world would secret agents just bump into the house of a justice of the supreme court and a former governor with an empty search warrant with no name written on it”, the human rights lawyer noted.

In a related development the Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, has called on all patriotic Nigerians and the International Community, especially the United Kingdom and the United States, “not to remain indifferent to the oppressive actions of the Nigerian government against its citizens”.

In a stamen issued by PANDEF’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Robinson, the group condemned the raid on the Abuja residence of Justice Mary Odili, demanding for the unveiling of those who ordered and carried out the unlawful invasion of the home of Justice Mary Odili for appropriate punishment.

“The raid, in dusk hours of last Friday, is not only crude and primitive but barbaric and dictatorial. It is another attempt by Agents of the Buhari administration to further intimidate and humiliate the Nation’s Judiciary. And this one of such actions too many, against persons of southern extraction, particularly, persons from the South-South Geopolitical Zone.

“It was in the same nefarious manner that the Abuja residence of the former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, was invaded in January 2019, which was considered by many as part of political machinations, leading to the 2019 General Elections.

“Earlier, in 2016, the DSS or SSS, in a Gestapo manner, raided the homes of John Okoro and Sylvester Ngwuta, who is now deceased, alongside the residences of Adeniyi Ademola, and Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

“Nigeria is not an “Animal Kingdom” and we cannot afford to let it plummet to that state; the ramifications would be catastrophic for the entire world”, the statement said, adding that such acts of desperation are capable of truncating Nigeria’s democracy.

It would be recalled that Justice Mary Odili is the next in line to become the Chief Justice of Nigeria, and there are concerns that those who do not want a southerner to occupy the office may have started their mischief,  an infamy which  vigilant Nigerians are determined to resist because that position is not the exclusive preserve of people from a section of the country.
