Rt. Hon. Chibudom Nwuche, former Deputy Speaker, Federal House of Representatives

(By Chris K. Amadi) -Just a shouting distance away from the 2019 general elections in Nigeria, and at a time when many citizens are becoming restive over the lingering scarcity of Premium Motor Spirit across the country and the alleged failure of the All Progressives Congress, APC, led Federal Government to fulfil its electoral promises close to three years in office, President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed 209 board chairmen and 1,258 members, with Timi Alaibe, former managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, as the chairman of Oil and Gas Free Zone Authority.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF,  Boss Mustapha, who announced the appointments on Friday, in Abuja, also named Chibudom Nwuche, former deputy speaker, House of Representatives as chairman of Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, while Pastor Yomi Kasali will chair the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission.

According to Boss Mustapha, the appointment is with immediate effect and the ministers overseeing the respective government owned agencies and parastatals were accordingly directed to constitute the boards.

He said “ Mr. President considered the approval for the constitution of the Boards as well as the appointments, very necessary, so as to provide a proper Governance and oversight structure for Government Agencies and Parastatals”, adding that the move was in furtherance government’s desire to build strong institutions of governance and improving the quality of Policy formulation and supervision.

There are also indications that the president may appoint more ministers, even as the SGF assures that other appointments will be made in line with the president’s earlier promise.

Others who were named as board chairmen include a former managing director of The News Agency of Nigeria, who returning as its chairman, Mr. Dapo Abiodun, will be in charge at Corporate Affairs Commission, while the ruling A PC’s legal adviser, Muiz Banire was named new chairman of the Asset Management Company of Nigeria(AMCON), and Senator Olorunimbe Mamora chairman of Abuja Investment and Infrastructure Centre.
