(By Silas Tamuno)-In spite of the avalanche of criticisms of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Buhari says he still holds the Ogun state – born elder statesman in the highest esteem.
In a congratulatory message issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on media and publicity, Garba Shehu, on Obasanjo’s 82nd birthday on Tuesday, Buhari praised Obasanjo for his “remarkable contributions to national development” and especially, his immeasurable contributions to national unity and the enthronement and deepening of democracy in Nigeria.
Buhari said that Obasanjo’s contributions to the development of the country overshadow the political differences between them, eve as he disclosed that “Chief Obasanjo gave a good account of himself and inspired his juniors with his wit and other leadership skills.
“Nigeria’s successful transition to democratic rule in October 1979 was one of Obasanjo’s remarkable contributions to national development,” eve as he wished Obasanjo “more good health, knowledge and wisdom in the service of Nigeria and humanity”.
Earlier, Dr. Obasanjo had observed that his criticism of Buhari’s administration was not borne out of personal hatred but to promote good governance in Nigeria.
“That is what democracy is all about. So, if I say anybody in government in Nigeria or any government in Africa is not doing well, let that government prove that it is doing well; it is not taking things personally,” he insisted.
