(By Iheanyi Ezinwo)-The Chief of Staff to the Rivers State Governor, Engr. Chukwuemeka Woke, has donated a residential apartment to Mrs. Rebecca Walama, a Widow at Ogbodo Community of Oduoha town in the Emohua Local Government Area, who had been displaced for sometime after the house she was residing in her late husband’s compound was gutted by fire.
Engr. Woke also commissioned a water project that he executed to resolve the challenge of lack of portable water at Rumuokani community also in Oduoha town as a way of giving back to the society and also complimenting the efforts of the Rivers State Governor, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike.
In his remarks after he presented the key of the house to the Widow, Chief of Staff to the Rivers State Governor, Engr. Chukwuemeka Woke, explained that the widow needed the relief from squatting at this critical time when there is so much emphasis in the society on the practice social distancing.
He said: “Our party faithful identified one of our supporters, who is a widow. She had no place to stay.
“God has given us the opportunity through the re-election of Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike. It is now my responsibility to ensure that the dividends of democracy gets to the grassroots”, even as he emphasized that , it was only incumbent on those working with the Governor to reach out to a woman who has served the party faithfully, and may never have an opportunity of meeting the Governor and party leader in the state.
The Engineer further said:
“To practice social distancing during this era of COVID-19, you need a residence. This is my way of giving back to the society”.
Chief Chukwuemeka Woke explained that he resolved to execute the water project when his attention was drawn to the lack of a functional water project in the area.
“I decided to execute this water project in this community because of my desire to promote the health and hygiene of this area.
“How can they wash their hands when they have no water? By providing water, they can engage in regular washing of their hands . We are not here to play politics, but to give back to the society”, he maintained.
In their remarks, Traditional Ruler of the area, Eze Ohwor Okah and Oduoha youth chairman, Comrade Friday Wekere, thanked the Chief of Staff to the Rivers State Governor for his commitment to the welfare of the people and his numerous life changing developmental projects in the area.
Earlier, in an emotion laden voice, the widow and beneficiary of the new house, Mrs. Rebecca Walama, thanked the Chief of Staff for making it possible for her to return to her late husband’s compound, and prayed for God’s blessings on the sponsor.
Highlights of the events were the distribution of bags of rice and other items as well as cash to the people as palliatives by Engr. Woke to cushion the impact of the lock down in the state occasioned by the coronavirus threat across the world.
