Democracy Day In Nigeria: Buhari Honours Abiola, Replaces May 29 With June 12

(By Silas Amie)-President Muhammadu Buhari has declared June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day instead of May 29 which was instituted by the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo.
In a statement he personally signed on Wednesday. President Buhari said June 12 is symbolic in the political history of Nigeria because on that day, Nigeria conducted its fairest and freest election and which was presumably won by late Chief Mooshood Abiola.
It would be recalled that, that election was annulled by the military junta under General Ibrahim Babangida in 1993. President Buhari has however honoured the late business mogul with the award of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic, GCFR, while his running mate in that election, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, was also recognized with the award of Grand Commander of the Order of Niger.
The president went further to give post humous award of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger to late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, a human rights activist of his own generation, for his tireless agitations for the actualization of June 12
