Farmers Threaten Response, As Cows Devastate Farms In Rivers

Farmers in Rivers State are lamenting continuous invasion of their farmers by herders, in utter disregard of the anti-open grazing law recently passed by the Rivers State House of Assembly, describing the violations as vexatious and highly provocative.

Speaking with Notable Outcome last Saturday at Aluu in the Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, a farmer who introduced himself as Mr. Nwo-Nna, recounted how he got to his farm on Saturday morning only to see his vegetables, cassava, yam and the entire farm devastated by cows.

He said that his farm, which was not even along the road was experiencing the attack for the second time, and that the saving grace was that he did not meet them. The farmer called on the Rivers State Government, Myyetti Allah and other relevant authorities to warn the herders to keep off peoples’ farms in their own interest.

Farm Devastated

The troubled further explained that, it was becoming a regular practice for herders to parade their cows along the roads, and for cows to stray into farms to destroy peoples means of livelihood, but warned of unpleasant consequences the day that they will be caught in the act.

While declaring that Rivers people are hospital, the farmer warned cruel stranger elements, who do not have respect for the laws of the land as well as terrorizing other peoples means of livelihood, to take their lawlessness elsewhere.

Other farmers who spoke with Notable Outcome called for the establishment of a system for the monitoring of activities of herders, and to ensure that those who take their cows into farms are identified and adequately sanctioned to serve as a deterrent to others.
