Prof. Princewill Chike, Rivers Health Commissioner administering the deworming medicine to a student at Government Girls Secondary School, Rumueme in Port Harcourt on Tuesday

(By Chris K.Amadi)-The free deworming of pupils aged between 5 and 14 has began in schools in Rivers state.
Flagging off the exercise at the Government Girls Secondary School, Rumueme, Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Princewill Chike harped on the need for pupils to observe good hygienic habits of washing their hands always and also keep their environment clean. He added that children who are not in school will be treated in schools near them in all public and private primary and junior secondary schools across the state.

Prof. Chike advised the students who have taken the medicine to inform their friends to come and do likewise, Prof. Chike said the exercise will run from Tuesday, 26th June to Thursday, 28th June, 2018 between 8am and 4pm daily.

Also speaking at the event, Programme Manager of Evidence Act in the South South, Joseph Hunbor, said they are providing technical and funding support, especially in the areas of training , treatment and communications strategy, and that the exercise is going on contemporaneously in 15 local government areas where teachers have been trained for the purpose and parents mobilized.
He also said the World Health Organisation provided the drugs through the Federal Ministry of Health.
There were representatives from the Federal Ministry of Health and the Rivers State Ministry of Education.
