(By Iheanyi Ezinwo) Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has been nominated for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, Global Human Settlements Outstanding Contribution Award by the Sustainable Cities and Human Settlements Awards, SCAHSA, a group that is supported by United Nations Environment.
The award which, according to the organisers, was in recognition of the massive infrastructural development and good governance aptly demonstrated by Governor Wike in the last two years in Rivers State.
Meanwhile, several groups in Nigeria are celebrating the global recognition of the strategic efforts of Governor Ezenwo Wike to advance the course of development in Rivers State. They include the Rivers Elders Consultative Council, Coalition of Rivers Patriots and Coalition of Niger Delta Vanguards.
In separate statements made available to Notable Outcome in Port Harcourt, the groups commended the United Nations for recognizing the contributions of the governor in expanding the scope of infrastructural development in Rivers State at a time of economic challenges in Nigeria.
They also congratulated the governor for the award, which they observed is not only an endorsement of his inclusive administration where no one is left behind, but also a great honour to Rivers State and Nigeria, as well as a strong statement of hope for good governance in Africa.
The excited groups urged other political leaders in Nigeria to emulate Governor Wike’s exemplary, visionary and people centred leadership, even as they called on Rivers people to continue to support his administration for demonstrating competence, and consistently delivering on its promises in spite of politically motivated distractions and dwindling allocations.
It would be recalled that, following the nomination of Rivers State governor for United Nations award, scores of other nominations have followed in quick succession globally.
Writing on Governor Wike’s nomination for Good Governance Award by the United Nations on his Twitter handle, Professor Alfred Nicholles of UK Investment Institute made the following observations:
“The award is unprecedented in the annals of recognition of African personality and leadership profile”. He described Governor Wike as “one of Nigeria’s leading light in both democratic and corporate governance”, stressing that “Governor Wike has demonstrated capacity and capability and also earned the confidence and trust of the good people of the oil rich Rivers State in the Niger Delta belt, south of Sahara”
