(By Chris K. Amadi) – Governor Ezenwo Wike of Rivers State has been described as a good product that sells itself following the tremendous achievements recorded in the short but very impressive period of over two years in the saddle. It is therefore not debatable that there is no alternative to the issue of leadership of the state even in 2019.
This opinion was expressed by Chief Emeh Glory Emeh, former Chief of Staff, Rivers State Government House while fielding questions from newsmen on the sideline of South South regional meeting on restructuring at Obi Wali Centre in Port Harcourt over the weekend.
Chief Emeh told reporters that the days when people jumped into the ring of contesting position for the sake of wielding political power is over.
Wike’s performance, according the Special Adviser to the governor on Political Affairs and Strategy has shown that you will need to be adequately prepared to make a mark in any given assignment.
‘’The situation we find ourselves in Rivers State today has made it impossible for any Dick, Tom and Harry to nurse the ambition of providing leadership without adequate preparation and attested pedigree. This is particularly so in view of the ethno- political arrangement of the state.
Wike has shown that what the people needed is a man with capacity, without ethno -centric sentiments. He is accessible, youth friendly, respectful to elders and cares for women who are mothers. It is therefore difficult to compete with someone with these characteristics”, he stressed.
The legal practitioner recalled that in the past, no one leader was so acceptable to all the ethnic groups in the state, stressing that it is the first time politicians from different backgrounds are united that Wike has selflessly run the affairs of the state for the well being of the citizens.
On whether or not All Progressives Congress has a chance in the state in 2019, the political strategist said: ‘’It will be unfair to the people of the state, each time people still make reference to the contraption called APC. This is because as a politician, I have been around, and in and out of government to appreciate the circumstances that can make a person feel that he has adequately prepared for an election.
“We are all familiar with the saying that when you over sleep for an examination, you don’t expect to pass. Can a house divided against itself, make progress? The answer is NO! Where will APC start to compete with us in this state? It is easy for the Carmel to pass through the eye of a needle than for APC to think that Rivers State Government House is available to them any more for life”, the former commissioner of transport and aviation said.
On my advise to APC, they should borrow a leaf from the age long adage that when a singer sees a person who is better than him he echoes, even as he calls on the APC to join forces with Wike to ensure a peaceful state as, especially against the background that a factionalised and fractionalised party cannot think of holding on to power in a sophisticated state like Rivers.
