Involving Bishops In Unveiling of Candidate: Wrong Politics, Says Former Chief of Staff

(By Iheanyi Ezinwo) – Reactions are still trailing the claimed presence of 30 Bishops at the recent unveiling of Senator Kashim Shettima as the vice presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC. The latest one is coming from Barr. Emeh Glory Emeh, former Chief of Staff, Rivers State Government House, Port Harcourt, while exchanging views with newsmen during the week.

Barr. Emeh, who also served as Commissioner of Transport and Aviation in Rivers State, believe that there was no reason to involve men of God in the controversy of who becomes the vice presidential candidate of a political party.

” I am not excited about the story making the rounds that persons who are said not to be men of God claim that they are, in an attempt to capture a particular religious sect or denomination.

“As much as every body, irrespective of their beliefs are free to participate in partisan politics, I believe it should be out of their own volition and not being coerced to do so.

“And worse still, the impression being given is that of impersonation.
If a person is fit and proper and the choice is generally acceptable, there is no need to make their beliefs a subject matter in an attempt to gain a milestone.

“Answering the question as to whether the presence of the Bishops will, in any form assist the Muslim/Muslim ticket of the APC, Chief Emeh, who is a specialist in politics and governance, said:

“I would even think that it would worsen it because the controversy surrounding the issue of Muslim/Muslim or Christian/Christian ticket is very deep in the political discourse at the moment and it would have been better that any reasonable politician keep such conversation at the background.

“It is worse when this introduction of religion into political discourse is shrouded in the secrecy of the authenticity of those who presented themselves as clerics, and could not identify themselves in terms of their names and the denominations that they represent, such as Catholic, Pentecostal, Anglican etc; Glory Emeh observed.

The political strategist further said: “My humble advise would be that the issues of religion and ethnicity should be played down if we want to build a united society that would be based on ability and capacity.

“When Atiku Abubakar picked Governor Okowa,a devout Christian as his Vice Presidential candidate, the balancing was clear and there was no controversy in acceptability of Nigerians”, the Accountant/Lawyer concluded with finality.
