(By Chris K. Amadi)-The Commander in charge of Police Anti-Cult Squad in Lagos State, Mr. Godwin Agbegbe has been sacked and replaced with Mr. Akaninyene Etuk by the Commissioner of Police in the state, while many of the personnel of the unit have been redeployed over complaints of corruption and misconduct
News Agency of Nigeria reports that a statement to that effect was issued by the Lagos Police Command’s spokesman, Mr. Chike Oti, who announced that the officer-in-charge of the unit, Mr. Godwin Agbegbe, was specifically removed because of allegations of unprofessional conduct and corrupt practices while many officers who served under him have been ordered to report to the command’s headquarters in Ikeja for debriefing.
It would be recalled that, in the same way that Lagosians were complaining about the unprofessional conduct of the Anti-Cult Squad, was how many citizens who live and do business in Rivers State complained loudly against observed misconduct among operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad led by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Akin Fakorede.
The situation degenerated to the point that SARS operatives were allegedly implicated in kidnapping and robbery cases as well as in the subversion of security infrastructure in Rivers State, and these developments compelled the Rivers State Governor, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike to call for the redeployment of Akin Fakorede, who was also being accused of going outside his brief to dabble into the politics of Rivers State.
Although the authorities of the Nigeria Police transferred the Commander of SARS to another state in the heat of the protests against SARS in Rivers State but he was returned to Rivers State after a few days, and the Government of Rivers State has insisted that Fakorede’s return was not in the interest of the state, but to serve a narrow political purpose in 2019.
Meanwhile, following widespread complaints of incessant harassment by men of the Nigeria Force, especially the excesses of SARS operatives across the country, the Inspector General of Police, Idris Ibrahim has released telephone numbers that will enable the public report cases of misconduct involving the operatives.
Some of the numbers are: 09026900729,08078662130,08174041000; whatsapp: 09035621377
While analysts who spoke with Notable Outcome in Port Harcourt have praised the Inspector General of Police for releasing the telephone lines to enable the citizens reach the authorities whenever the need arises. However, they charged him to match his words with action, especially in Rivers State.
According to them, the alleged disregard of written complaints of the Rivers State governor against several professional misconducts of SARS in the state by the Inspector General of Police have shaken the confidence of the average citizen on objectivity of the police on any matter affecting acts of misconduct among SARS operatives in the state.
