(By Iheanyi Ezinwo)-Dr. Adol Dakuku Peterside, failed candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Rivers State in the 2015 governorship election, for the umpteenth time was reported as saying that Rivers people want Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike out in 2019 for not managing their resources well. He further boasted that come May 29, 2019, that the PDP will be out of the Government House and APC will take over.
The propositions of Dakuku Peterside are personal in all ramifications. I am a Rivers man; my parents are all from Rivers State and I support Wike’s re-election, not because of partisan reasons but because he has performed, more than any Nigerian governor, both past and present in the country’s political history. Dakuku Peterside’s comment during the Local Government Congress of APC in Opobo on Sunday was misleading and does not represent the wishes and aspirations of Rivers people. He should speak for himself because on the day of election, he will cast only one vote. Any one who has plans to speak for, or vote for the entire Rivers people in 2019 should forget it because the people will speak for themselves and freely vote for candidates of their choice.
The likes of Dakuku who are playing God over 2019 should also remember that, there is only one almighty God, who openly disgraces those who claim what they are not. They should also remember that no one person has a monopoly of anything! Dakuku was not and cannot be speaking for me and other Rivers people! His comment at Opobo, which was inspired by partisan sentiments was indeed a misrepresentation of the state of affairs and the position of vast majority of Rivers people.
As Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Dakuku is yet to fulfill the legitimate expectations of Rivers people. Until Peterside justifies the use of his current office, he has no strong position to challenge Wike, who has justified the use of power in the last three years in Rivers State, whose landmark achievements are there for all to see. Nigeria’s Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Dakuku’s fellow party man saw the massive developments when he visited Rivers State and nicknamed Governor Wike as Mr. Project. Rivers people do not want to move from super performance to under performance, from the known to the unknown.
Governor Wike, on Sunday, during the thanksgiving service to mark three years of his administration at the Living Faith Church, Kaduna Street in Port Harcourt, had raised alarm over plans to assassinate him. That is not the way to go, because it will do no one any good. Any one who is thinking of moving against the will of the people of Rivers State will be paddling against the tide and will therefore fail because it will not work. In 2019, Rivers people will not give in to intimidation and half truths except to convictions of truth, honour, performance and good sense.
Dakuku Peterside was on a radio programme in Port Harcourt recently and one would have thought that, the kind of questions thrown at him should have given him an idea of his rating by Rivers people. It is important to remind Dakuku that power is a means and not an end in itself. What we are seeing is a man who appears to be desperate for the office of Governor of Rivers State, with no superior ideas that will advance the cause of development of the state. That office is not a private property of any individual: Rivers people will freely speak for themselves in 2019.
