(By Chris K. Amadi) – Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has been commended for his timely intervention to check the further and future occurrence of the dastardly act of senseless killings at Omoku on new year’s eve.
The commendation was made by Coalition of Rivers Patriots, who in a statement signed by the publicity secretary Barr. Thompsom Barilede had thanked Governor Wike for the offer of ransom of N200m to any person who can give information that will lead to the arrest of the perpetrators of the ungodly act, describing the governor as not only sensitive to the well being of the citizens of the state but also a true lover of his people.
The Patriots, while condemning the killing of worshipers and other innocent citizens of Omoku community, described as irresponsible attempts by the All Progressives Congress, APC, and its leadership in the state to play politics with the unfortunate incident.
In a related development, the Rivers Elders Consultative Council has also expressed concern that any responsible Rivers man or woman can play politics with the misfortune of the loss of life of fellow brothers and sisters.
The elders, in a statement signed by Chief (Dr.) Granville Abiye Georgewill, its executive secretary described the comments credited to the state chairman of APC, David Ibiamu Ikanya as insensitive and irresponsible. They also condemned the hasty comments of the party’s flag bearer in the 2015 Governorship election, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, as well as that of the former governor of the state and current minister of transportation, Rt.Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, describing the duo as persons who are out of touch with the people.
In the statement, the elders wondered how any sane person could associate the Rivers State Government with the killings in Omoku, even as it questioned why Rotimi Amaechi will not apportion the same measure of blame to APC governors in Lagos, Kaduna, Edo where similar incidences occurred on the eve of the new year if not for unnecessary hatred for the current administration in the state.
The Rivers Elders Consultative however commended Governor Wike for his deliberate efforts in improving the quality of security architecture in the state, urging him not to be distracted by the antics of those the apex elders body in Rivers State described as persons who abandoned the state when they have opportunity to help them.
