(By Sias Ofori) -The sudden announcement of the dissolution of local vigilante groups in the Emohua local government area of Rivers State on Tuesday by the council chairman, Tom Aliezi, has been greeted with outrage across Rivers State.
Distraught citizens who reacted in a radio programme on Wednesday and others who spoke with Notable Outcome in Port Harourt had argued that there was no justification for the council chairman to suddenly dissolve the vigilante groups in the entire local government area. They described the action as hasty and amounted to throwing away the baby with the dirty bathwater.
The concerned citizens, therefore, called on Governor Nyesom Wike and prominent citizens from the area to call Tom Aliezi to order as his action may reverse the gains so far gained in the restoration of security in the Emohua axis of the state that was taken over by cultists and kidnappers just a little more than one year ago.
Tom Aliezi was also advised to identify the bad eggs among the vigilante groups and fish them out while allowing the law-abiding members to continue the good work that they have been doing so that the people can continue to sleep with their two eyes closed.
Hon. Aliezi was also challenged to ensure that there is an interim alternative to OSPAC in the area, as his recent decision dissolving the vigilante groups, which are still very much in operation in other parts of the state would leave a gap that could be filled by unscrupulous persons, and threaten the security of lives and property of travellers and those who live and do business in the area.
