(By Chris K. Amadi) –
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has began to take steps towards securing victory by all means for their presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, in the 2023 presidential election. This indication was given by Senator Walid Jibrin, while stepping down as the chairman of the Board of Trustees, BOT, of the PDP at a meeting of the BOT in Abuja on Thursday, adding that he will be considered for a bigger position if the party wins.
Speaking with newsmen, Senator Jibrin said:
“I took this decision based on what I said in the past. I said that all we want to make sure of is that Atiku Abubakar becomes the President by all means, and that is why I sincerely decided to step down from the BoT. I discussed this with the candidate and he agreed with me. I am sure if the party wins, I will be given a bigger position.”
While stressing that his decision was to ensure the party’s presidential candidate emerged victorious in the 2023 elections, the immediate past PDP BOT chairman
was optimistic that he would be considered for a bigger position if Atiku Abubakar wins.
Meanwhile, a former President of the Nigerian Senate, Adolphus Wabara, who hails from Abia State, has been appointed his replacement while Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State replaces Governor Aminu Tambunwal of Sokoto State as Chairman of the PDP Governor’s Forum.
With these strategic concessions of important positions in the party to the south, the political gladiators have foreclosed the option of the National Chairman of the party resigning.
Although Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has consistently maintained that there will be no peace untill the National Chairman of the party, Dr. Iyiocha Ayu, is replaced with a southerner because of the emergence of Atiku Abubakar, a northerner as presidential candidate, it does appear that the party organs, who have passed a vote of confidence on the chairman are determined to win the election, with or without the Rivers State Governor.
