(By Chris K.A.madi)-The attention of residents of Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital was shifted from politics of defections in Nigeria midweek to the story of a 36 year old Joe Blankson, who drowned on Saturday probably out of exhaustion after rescuing over 10 victims of a boat accident, and in search of other survivors.
Although the police claim only one person died in the boat mishap that happened when the boat heading to the nearby Bakana in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State, from Port Harcourt, capsized, eye witnesses who claimed the boat had 24 persons on board including the driver said six persons lost their lives.
Observers had also alleged that the accident may have been caused by over speeding and the presence of improperly disposed plastic bottles and other foreign bodies on the water ways.
Meanwhile, the news of sudden death of Joe Blankson in the course of trying to save other passengers on the trip to Bakana on Saturday is attracting deserved attention, grief and tributes across the state. Commentators are demanding for special recognition for the late Blankson, who was said to be a contractor and father of two.
They are also urging governments at all levels to consider urgent ways and means of immortalizing the man variously celebrated as a hero, and also how to assist the wife and two children that he left behind.
The body of the late Blankson was said to have been found floating on Sunday, and reports indicated that he has since been buried.
