Prof Amah Charges Managers To Become Leaders


(By Iheanyi Ezinwo) – Managers in different areas of human endeavour have been challenged to go beyond management and become leaders by showing genuine interest in the welfare of those working with them. The challenge was given by Prof.Edwinah Amah, lecturer in Management department at the University of Port Harcourt, while speaking at a lecture organized by the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered), Rivers State chapter, in honour of late Prof. Rosemund Dienye-Osahogulu, pioneer Vice Chancellor at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, at the institution’s auditorium on Monday.

Prof. Amah, who spoke on “Management for excellence and effectiveness”, noted that people are effective in different ways because of different goals and values, and that it is possible to achieve excellence in any life endeavour through management.

She further hinted that self awareness is what transforms management into leadership, and
challenged managers to be interested in the welfare and future of those who work under them, match organizational goals with the goals of the employees as a way of motivating them to achieve their potentials.

The University don further asked managers to be smart to see opportunities, creatively respond to threats and develop themselves in order to be in a good position to take advantage of opportunities that may arise in future.

Prof.Edwinaj Amah also counselled managers to set goals and clarify priorities; be men and women of integrity so they can be trusted; eliminate bad habits and negativities, and tolerate criticism, stressing that leaders who have made their marks at the global stage used timeless management principles to turn around the fortunes of their countries.

Earlier, the chairman of the Rivers State chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Management(Chartered), Mr.Christian Abu, had stated that the lecture was organised in honour of the pioneer Vice Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Prof. Rosemund Dienye-Osahogulu, who passed a few weeks ago. The chairman recalled that the departed former vice chancellor was also a committed member of the body where should rose to become a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management.

Highlights of the occasion was tributes by the Vice Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Prof. Ozo-Mercury Ndimele, principal officers of the Nigerian Institute of Management, Rivers State chapter, and family members or the departed. Her remains would be interred in Port Harcourt during the weekend.
