Prof. Emenike Wami

(By Iheanyi Ezinwo) – A new leadership of Ogbakor Ikwerre National Convention Worldwide, with Prof. Emenike Wami as President General has emerged on Sunday with a promise to mobilize resources to tackle the growing insecurity in Ikwerre land of Rivers State, Nigeria. He therefore calls on all sons and daughters, as well as friends of Ikwere to come up with ideas on how to tackle on a sustainable basis, the emergent hydra headed problem of insecurity in the area.

Speaking with Notable Outcome in Port Harcourt, , Prof. Wami, a petro-chemical engineer, was worried that access to farms is becoming difficult because of insecurity and fear in many communities. “Our first assignment is to seek ways of calling our youths to order”, he said, adding that the socio-cultural organization of Ikwerre people in Rivers State would explore options of partnering with government at all levels with a view to coming up with programmes that would create jobs and meaningfully engage the youths.

The new President General, who hinted that they are also considering rededicating the land and its people to God, said God is the focus of the new administration. “We want to redirect our people to know God. Once we fear God and know Him, the effort of government will yield fruit”, the new President General emphasized.

He said the next priority is to promote peaceful coexistence in Ikwerre communities and addressing cases of chieftaincy disputes in troubled kingdoms. Responding to a question he said: “We can do better when we eschew hatred. We want to consolidate on what God has given to us, ensuring that our people are focused and pursuing a common cause, devoid of bitterness”.

Prof. Wami further explained that the mission of Ogbakor Ikwerre since 1963 when it was founded has been to reposition Ikwerre in the scheme of things in Rivers State and beyond, and that the organization is on course. “We have tried in terms of surviving many regimes – military and civilian. Our leaders have also been careful: Ogbakor has survived, and never been proscribed like organisations that were formed about the same time.

“ There have been challenges, but God has positioned us for greater things. I see us doing better than we have done in the past, if only the political class will allow the dream of our founding fathers to remain their focus. We cannot all share the same view politically but all must focus on the common good”, he stressed.

Prof. Emenike Wami, the new President General of Ogbakor Ikwerre National Convention World wide, had served as president of the body in the United Kingdom until his return to Nigeria in 1980. ”I have been an active member of the organisation since my return, serving as secretary of OPA branch, and First Vice President at different times”, he explained.

The retired professor of petrochemical engineering, who succeeded Professor Chituru Simeon Achinewhu, former vice chancellor at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, now Rivers State University, had also served as Dean of Faculty of Engineering and Graduate School respectively of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology.

He had also served as provost of the Rivers State Polytechnic, now Ken Saro-wiwa Polytechnic. Prof. Wami, who is married with children, hails from Rebisi in the Port Harcourt City Local Government area of Rivers State.
