Rivers Assembly Passes Law Naming Judicial Institute After Mary Odili

The invaluable contributions of Justice Mary Odili, retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, to the judiciary in Rivers State and the entire country were reechoed on Friday, 20 January, 2023 at the Rivers State House of Assembly when the 13 law makers at the plenary gave their blessing to Governor Nyesom Wike’s request to rename the Rivers State Judicial Institute as Mary Odili Judicial Institute.

In the Executive Bill christened: Judicial Institute Law Number 8 of 2021 Amendment Bill 2023, and presented by the House Leader, Hon. Martins Amaewhule, the Governor also sought that the Chief Judge of the State be empowered to appoint the three most senior Judges of the High Court to serve in the Governing Board of the Institute.

Speaking after the Committee of the whole house, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ikuinyi Owaji-Ibani – Ibani reiterated that the two minor amendments of the principal law became necessary to facilitate justice administration in Rivers State.

He also recalled that it was not the first time that important institutions would be named after illustrious sons and daughters of Rivers State, just as he stated that it was an honour well deserved by Justice Mary Odili.

Rt. Hon. Ikuinyi – Ibani further explained that similar recognitions await any Rivers person who distinguishes himself in any area of human endeavour.

Meanwhile, the lawmakers are making progress in their consideration of the bill for a law for the maintainence of public buildings in Rivers State.
