Rivers: How Agitations For Fairness Threw Up Fubara As PDP Guber Candidate

(By Iheanyi Ezinwo) – Since after the administrations of Dr. Peter Odili in 2007 and that of Rt.Hon. Chibuike Amaechi in 2015, there had been campaigns for power to shift to the reverine. The argument of the campaigners was that power had been domiciled in the upland since the return to democracy in 1999, and that, in the interest of fairness, that other parts of the state should be given a sense of belonging.

While the reverine agitators were making their points, another group who felt that the reverine/upland argument was no longer relevant took the path of  zoning based on senatorial districts. According to them, whereas the South West had produced Dr.Peter Odili, the East both Rt. Hon.Chibuike Amaechi, Sir. Celestine Omehua and Barr.Nyesom Wike, that the South East was yet to occupy the most exalted office in Rivers State.

This later argument was not only considered   objective by many, it was  also considered to be in tune with current realities. This was probably the reason why Governor Wike endorsed Mr. Siminalayi
Fubara, a guber aspirant from Opobo a few days before the primaries, and the ultimate emergence of Fubara as the candidate  in spite of the weak argument that Opobo was not core Ijaw.

Like a dream come true, Siminalayi Fubara,  a proud son of Opobo from the  reverine,  and also from  the South East senatorial district,  has emerged as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party. As it is public knowledge, Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area, LGA, is not one of the populous LGA’s in Rivers State, and so, could not have been  able to produce a governor unless in special circumstances. In our opinion, the preemptive endorsement of Fubara by Governor Wike was guided by personal morality. It was therefore not surprising that vast majority of the delegates voted for Fubara yesterday  to return him as the governorship candidate of the PDP in the 2023 election.

Those who are kicking against the earlier endorsement of Fubara by Governor Wike were not being realistic. The reason is because, every one irrespective of position has his own preferred aspirant from among the lot. Interestingly, irrespective of whoever  the Governor endorses, those who are not favoured will naturally be unhappy. Incidentally, the office is for one person at a time, and since some aspirants may not want to step down for any other opponent, as manifested in  the three Kalabari sons not agreeing to support  one among them,  such timely endorsement helped to break  a possible deadlock and facilitate the process of choosing a candidate for the party.

The emergence of Fubara, who rose to the peak of his career as an accountant in the Rivers State Civil Service is therefore a manifestation of inclusiveness in leadership recruitment process and expression of the freedom of the delegates based on fairness and equity.
