(By Iheanyi Ezinwo) – The people of Rumuomasi in Rivers State, one of the host communities to Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited, SPDC, Industrial Area, have cried out over alleged deliberate scheme to deny graduates from the community employment in the company for over 60 years.
Speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt on the matter which the community considers of urgent public importance, the Paramount Ruler of Oropotoma kingdom, Eze Raymond Chinda, lamented that Rumuomasi town has graduates with third class, second class and first class in different disciplines, including engineering and law but that non of them has been considered fit for employment in Shell, a company he said they have been hosting for over 60 years.
“Our people are peaceful; Shell has lived in our land for about 62 years. The community has never given them any stress and cause to worry about the safety of their workers, so we are not asking for things that are impossible. What we are saying is that, if you are employing, please give some consideration to IA and RA host communities”, Eze Chinda pleaded.
However, when Notable Outcome contacted the Spokesperson of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited, Barr. Joe Obari, he explained that his company is an equal opportunity employer, and that recruitment campaigns are always widely publicized and open to every qualified person.
He challenged qualified graduates from the community to apply and compete with others, assuring that anyone who performs well will not be denied employment in Shell.
Mr. Obari also hinted that all lower level jobs in the company have been the exclusive preserve of the host communities, but maintained that employment into the graduate cadre, where emphasis is on delivery, the high tech company cannot lower standards for someone because he is from host a community.
On the claim by Rumuomasi community that there are third class graduates in the employment of Shell, the Spokesperson of Shell said he will not answer the question but argued that basic requirements for applicants seeking to fill advertised positions are always indicated whenever vacancies are declared.
