(By Princess Okpara)-The break away Island of Taiwan has always been part of the Chinese family and will be compelled, if need be to be reunited with China. This is the position of the Chinese President Xi Jinping, while calling for peaceful unification at an event marking 40 years of efforts at improving ties between the two contending sides, adding that Beijing would never tolerate any form of activity promoting Taiwanese independence.
BBC quotes the Chinese president of saying that Taiwanese independence was an impossible idea that will only bring hardship to its people, even as he strongly advised the people of Taiwan to accept it “must and will be” reunited with China.
Xi Jinping, who had insisted that relations with Taiwan were “part of China’s domestic politics” and that “foreign interference is intolerable”, warned that China reserved the right to use force because, according to him, unification was “an inevitable requirement for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese people”.
Meanwhile, as Beijing claims it “reserves the option of taking all necessary measures” against outside forces that interfere with peaceful reunification and Taiwanese separatist activities, Taiwan’s president Tsai Ing-wen wants Beijing to respect the decision of 23 million people on freedom and democracy, as well as accept the existence of Taiwan and use peaceful means to resolve its differences.
BBC reports that, Taiwan has been a self-governed democracy and has acted as an independent nation since 1950, when China’s nationalist government was defeated by communist forces, but China still considers the island to be a renegade province – not a country in its own right – which will one day be fully reunited with the mainland.
