All Progressives Congress

(By Chris K. Amadi) – Politics as it is said globally, is a game of interest: Riding on the heels of this understanding, Dave Umahi had fired a shot, announcing his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, because the party’s alleged insensitivity to the feelings and aspirations of the south east region, which has been denied the number one seat in Nigeria’s recent political history.

Ostensibly, Umahi was not just speaking for himself, he was indeed speaking the minds of Ndigbo at home and abroad, and it does appear that the disposition of the ruling All Progressives Congress to redress the injustice is becoming an irresistible attraction to Ndigbo.

Respondibg to the Umahi’s defection move, a political activist in Ebonyi State, Lady Monica Chidinma Ada Eze said in a statement that the position of Governor Umahi is, and has always been that the Peoples Democratic Party be fair enough to ratify the injustices meted out on the South East since the inception of the party over two decades ago.

Recalling the roles played by Late Sage and former Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Alex Ekwueme alongside others in confronting the Abacha Junta to secure the current democracy the country enjoys and which pioneered the formation of the Peoples Democratic Party, Lady Monica Eze lamented that the efforts of the Ndigbos were not commensurately rewarded, adding that Dr. Ekwueme was not allowed to fly the party’s presidential flag in the build up to the 1999 Presidential election.

She said Ekwueme’s only crime was that he was from the South East region.
Despite several other acts of injustice and unfair treatments, Monica Eze maintained that the South East never staggered, but remained faithful to the course of the Peoples Democratic Party. She however regretted that the party have continued to treat the zone with levity, the reason why Umahi decided to speak up against the alleged undemocratic leanings of the party and its leadership.

The political activist maintained that zoning the presidential ticket to the south east would determine the seriousness on the part of the PDP to remedy their wrongs against the long neglected south east zone of Nigeria. She however aligns with Governor Umahi that, since the PDP has refused to zone its presidential ticket to the zone, that the Igbo will go with any political party that cedes to its interest.

Mean while, Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike disagrees with Governor Umahi of Ebonyi State.According to Wike, the south east has not been neglected by the PDP, but that the defecting governor is going to the APC in search of presidential ticket.
