The Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, has reportedly warned that the forthcoming election in Anambra state will not hold without Nnamdi Kanu, and this warning should never be ignored by every lover of democracy in general and the people of Anambra State who will be having another opportunity to freely choose who leads them.
Every Nigerian who have been following the activities of IPOB should know that the group has the capacity to make good its threat, having been rehearsing the sit at home in the south east states for a while now.
Against this background therefore, it is up to the leaders of the south east in general and Anambra state in particular to reach out to those concerned with a view to convincing them to shelve the plan, and explore other means to press for their demands.
Time has come for the Ohaneze and other south east leaders to borrow a leaf from Afenifere and other Yoruba leaders by closing ranks in order to present a common front at all times, and in this case, save the threatened democracy in Anambra State.
The current challenge posed by the election boycott may not be addressed by the declaration of state of emergency as no declaration can force an unwilling man to leave his house to go and vote. Other mechanisms must be employed to persuade the people to go and freely vote for the candidates of their choice.
Our considered opinion is that, the threat of IPOB to frustrate the Anambra election should not be dismissed with a wave of hand. This is because of the likely far reaching intended and unintended consequences.
