Wike Commended For Appointing Women Into Key Positions


(By Silas Tamuno)-Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has been commended for appointing women into leadership positions in the state.

The commendation was made by
Barr. Mrs. uchechukwu N .Uriri, Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Ministry of Women Affairs.
in a chat with news men in Port Harcourt as she reflected on the significance of the 2021 Women’s Day celebration with the theme: “Women in leadership achieving an equal future in a COVID- 19 world”.

According to her, Governor Wike has been mainstreaming women since he came to power in 2015, adding that Wike is first Rivers governor to appoint the first female deputy governor; the first female chief judge of the state and the first female president of the customary court of appeal.The governor has also done well in appointing female
commissioners, permanent secretaries and deputy chairpersons of the 23 local government councils of Rivers State, even as she maintained that ,the award given to Wike as the Most Gender Sensitive Governor by Women Affirmative Action Foundation is well deserved.

In the same vein, Dr Marie Teibowei called on other governors to emulate the governor of Rivers State in giving women pride of place in their administration as a way of meaningfully engaging and empowering the female folk.

Meanwhile, Mrs Uriri has advised Rivers women to be bold, focused, and position themselves in order to grab opportunities that comes their way, even as she urged the women not to shy away from leadership positions but should ignore the misconceptions about their involvement in leadership positions and make a difference whenever they are given opportunity.
