(By Iheanyi Ezinwo) – Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike administration’s frugal management of resources of Rivers State have attracted the attention of BugjectIT Nigeria, a reputable budget transparency advocacy group which has recognised Rivers State as the most fiscally sustainable state in Nigeria.
In the group’s newly published Fiscal Sustainability Index Report, Rivers State was ranked number one, ahead of Lagos. Kano and other states in Nigeria because of its healthier financial profile, especially the increase in the state’s Internally Generated Revenue, lower debt profile and ability to pay its bills and service her debts satisfactorily.
Responding to the positive development on Tuesday, in Port Harcourt, Barr. Emma Okah, Rivers Commissioner for Information and Communications recalls that while the transparency group’s State of the States’ report recognises that Lagos State records the highest Internally Generated Revenue in Nigeria, it placed Rivers ahead because of Lagos State’s huge debt of over N734 billion as at December 2016.
According to the Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, the report is “an endorsement of visionary leadership as the Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike administration in the State will continue to promote the wellbeing of our people, initiate laudable programmes and execute projects that will improve the living standards of Rivers people”.
